Default JDSU grants picosecond laser patent rights to Hamamatsu Corp.

Test and measurement and optical instrumentation provider JDSU Corp. has licensed patent rights for fundamental picosecond laser technology to Hamamatsu Corp. for the development of microelectronic products.

The picosecond laser's accuracy has made it a valuable tool for micromachining. Its precision also minimizes heat damage to surrounding areas during manufacturing.

In addition to micromachining, picosecond lasers are used for applications related to microsurgery, robotics, biological warfare and high-precision optical radar.

Hamamatsu Corp., Bridgewater, N.J., manufactures devices for the generation and measurement of infrared, visible and ultraviolet light, including photodiodes, infrared detectors and photomultiplier tubes.

Milpitas, Calif.-based JDSU’s clients include telecommunications service providers, network equipment manufacturers and the medical, semiconductor, aerospace and defense industries.
